States of Overwhelm: Consent, Risk, and the Sexual Life and Death Drives

June 4, 2019 8pm

Avgi Saketopoulou, PhD • Presenter
Stan Coen, MD • Discussant

Dr. Saketopoulou draws from Laplanche’s theory of the sexual life drive and the sexual death drive to explore what psychic phenomena we might expect from the synergy of these drives, other than trauma or traumatic overstimulation.  Dr. Saketopoulou will discuss what she calls “states of overwhelm.” These states of dysregulation follow the sexual drive’s escalation into the “more-and-more” of experience, towards a blend of pain and pleasure. Even though in our metapsychology we tend to think of them as de facto traumatic, Dr. Saketopoulou discusses these states as a radical unbinding of the ego and as opportunity for transformation. Dr. Coen will discuss this presentation from his extensive clinical experience in working with erotic transference-countertransference challenges.
Dr Saketopoulou is a psychoanalyst and faculty member at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis.

Dr Cohen is a training and supervising analyst at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research
